In short
What you type is processed on your Mac and never uploaded. The input method process makes no network connections except to the same Mac. mixin contains no analytics and sends no crash reports unless you opt in. When subscriptions launch, the licence check will send only your account email or ID, a random install ID, and the mixin and macOS versions. The mixin app checks for updates, which shows the update server your IP address and the app and macOS versions.
1. Who is responsible
The controller of the personal data described here is Jiawei Liu, 3869 Miramar St, Apt 1508, La Jolla, CA 92092, United States ("we", "us"). Contact: support@usemixin.com.
Representative in the EU and the UK (Art. 27 GDPR and UK GDPR; needed only if we are established outside them): {{EU_UK_REPRESENTATIVE}}.
2. Processed on your device only, never sent to us
- What you type. The mixin input method converts your keystrokes on your Mac. The input method process makes no network connections except to the same Mac (for example a scoring server you run yourself on 127.0.0.1). Nothing you type is uploaded.
- Model reranking (Pro). The small language model that re-ranks sentence candidates runs on your Mac. Candidates never leave your Mac.
- Personal learning. Corrections you confirm are stored in
~/Library/Application Support/mixinon your Mac. You can undo them, and you can delete them by deleting that folder. - Typing log (optional). Off by default. If you turn it on, a record of your commits is kept in the same folder on your Mac, for your own use. It is not sent to us.
- The web demo. The demo on usemixin.com runs in your browser. What you type there and what it learns stay in your browser's local storage.
3. The licence service (when subscriptions launch)
To check whether you have an active Pro trial or subscription, mixin will send our licence service:
- your account email address or account ID;
- a random install ID generated on your Mac (not derived from your hardware);
- the mixin version and the macOS version.
Purposes and legal bases:
- To provide the trial or subscription you asked for: the performance of our contract with you (Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR).
- To limit trials to one per person and to stop licence keys from being shared: our legitimate interest in preventing abuse of trials and licences (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR). You can object to this processing (section 11).
An account email address is needed only for Pro: without it we cannot activate a trial or subscription. The free tier needs no account and no personal data.
As with any internet connection, your IP address is visible to our hosting provider when your Mac connects; we do not use it to profile you.
4. Update checks (the mixin app)
The mixin app (the window that installs mixin and shows your licence, not the input method) checks for new versions with the Sparkle update framework, automatically and when you ask. Each check downloads an update list from our update server, which will be updates.usemixin.com, hosted by Cloudflare. The request carries the app version and the macOS version (in its User-Agent) and, like any connection, shows the server your IP address. Sparkle's optional anonymous system profile is not enabled, and the check carries no account or install ID. We use update-check requests only to deliver updates and keep the service secure, and keep their logs no longer than stated in section 10. Legal basis: our legitimate interest in giving you security fixes and updates (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR), and, for Pro, our contract with you (Art. 6(1)(b)). The input method process itself never makes these requests.
5. Purchases
Paddle.com Market Limited sells mixin Pro as Merchant of Record. Paddle collects your payment details and billing information as an independent controller under its own privacy policy (paddle.com/legal/privacy). We never see your full card details. Paddle shares with us what we need to provide and support your subscription: your email address, country, the plan and its status, and transaction records. Legal basis: the performance of our contract with you (Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR), and our legal obligation to keep tax and accounting records (Art. 6(1)(c) GDPR).
6. The website
usemixin.com sets no cookies of its own and uses Cloudflare Web Analytics to count visits. It sets no cookies, does not follow you across websites or build a profile of you, and gives us only aggregate figures: pages viewed, referring sites, countries, browsers and load times. Legal basis: our legitimate interest in knowing how the site is used (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR). Apart from Cloudflare's analytics script, the site loads no scripts, fonts or other resources from other websites. The beta download link sends you to GitHub (GitHub, Inc.), which serves the installer file and receives your IP address and browser details when you download it; GitHub's privacy statement applies to that. Our hosting provider, Cloudflare, processes technical request data, such as IP addresses, to deliver the site and protect it from abuse, and may set strictly necessary security cookies when it checks for automated traffic. Legal basis: our legitimate interest in delivering a secure website (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR).
7. When you contact us
If you write to support@usemixin.com, we use your email address and message to answer you (legal basis: our legitimate interest in answering, Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR, or our contract with you, Art. 6(1)(b)). Email to support@usemixin.com is forwarded by Cloudflare Email Routing to a Google Gmail mailbox.
8. Service providers
- Cloudflare, Inc.: hosting of the website, the update server and the licence service, the website's visit statistics (Web Analytics), and forwarding of email to support@usemixin.com (Email Routing) (processor).
- Google LLC (Gmail): the mailbox that receives and stores email to support@usemixin.com (processor).
- Paddle.com Market Limited: payments and billing, as an independent controller (see section 5).
We do not sell personal data and do not share it for advertising.
9. International transfers
Our providers may process data outside your country, including in the United States. Where data leaves the EEA, the UK or Switzerland, we rely on an adequacy decision (such as the EU–US Data Privacy Framework, where the provider is certified) or the European Commission's Standard Contractual Clauses.
10. How long we keep data draft
- Account and licence records: while you have a trial, subscription or account, and deleted within 30 days after you ask us to delete them or close your account.
- Licence-check and update-check request logs: no longer than 30 days.
- Support emails: up to 2 years after the conversation ends.
- Billing and tax records are kept by Paddle as the law requires.
11. Your rights
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access your data, correct it, delete it, restrict or object to its processing, and receive it in a portable format. Where we rely on your consent (for example, if you opt in to sending crash reports), you can withdraw it at any time; this does not affect processing before the withdrawal. Write to support@usemixin.com; we answer within one month. Data that exists only on your Mac is under your control: delete ~/Library/Application Support/mixin to remove it.
We make no decisions based solely on automated processing, including profiling, that have legal or similarly significant effects on you.
12. Complaints
If you think we handle your data unlawfully, you can complain to a data protection supervisory authority, in particular in the country where you live or work. We would appreciate the chance to fix it first.
13. Children
mixin Pro is not directed at children under 16, and we do not knowingly collect personal data from them.
14. Changes
We will post any change here with a new effective date, and tell subscribers about material changes by email before they take effect.
